There is an interesting article floating around entitled ‘Ad Industry: Here’s Why Your Best Talent Is Leaving And What You Can Do About It‘, written by Christine Champagne over at Co.CREATE. The general sentiment of the article is part of the reason why Wonder Giant was created. An industry built on creativity, but fueled by commerce will always feel like a bad divorce.
On one hand you have the creative process which is a very delicate, unpredictable thing. People spend years tuning into their creative process, and the ones who tend to succeed are the ones who have found ways to call upon it in a very controlled manner which is conducive to the 9-to-5 system most creatives are forced into.
An industry built on creativity, but fueled by commerce will always feel like a bad divorce.
On the other hand you have the rest of the business world which operates like a clock. Always being billable, and available during “working hours” is a system of predictability, and control. Both traits that are highly sought after by leadership. Unfortunately creativity tends to die under systems of control.
There will always be bad apples who will take advantage of flexibility, but we would much rather deal with them separately rather than ‘punish the whole class’.
